Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry

Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry is used as a complimentary technique for the synthesis of volatile organic compounds such as fuels, reaction products and intermediates.

This technique can be used qualitatively for the identification of unknown compounds or quantitatively for analysing the purity of a sample. This technique mainly separates a mixture on the basis on boiling point, however there is some interaction of compounds with the column and column packing material.

Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry equipment has the capability of separating and detecting a variety of compounds in a mixture. This equipment contains a Thermo GC-MS unit with an auto-sampler.

Examples of use

  • The identification and quantification of an unknown contaminant in a reaction product,
  • Environmental testing of pollutants and contaminants such as VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in air samples.
